When you're ready for an audit, you're ready for anything!
About Us

Douglas Hileman (FSA, CRMA, CPEA, P.E.) is founder and president of
Douglas Hileman Consulting LLC.

His audit experience dates back over 40 years, to an environmental, health and safety (EHS) audit to prepare for EPA and OSHA compliance deadlines.  Growing up in industry, his inherent sympathy is with the auditees.  His approach to audit readiness goes far beyond simply “passing the test.”  It extends to helping clients understand and improve their programs, improve efficiency and effectiveness, avoid irrelevant and non-productive distractions, and achieve value from positive audit outcomes.

He has experience with Internal Audits, financial audit support, sustainability reports, audits to conformance with consent decrees, SEC conflict minerals rule, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories.  He was the senior environmental management/ environmental audit specialist on the Volkswagen Monitor Team, working with teams of attorneys and accountants on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Mr. Hileman is an author of COSO’s “Achieving Effective Internal Controls Over Financial Reporting (ICSR)”, released to wide global acclaim in 2023.  This document is designed to bridge the gap between those who understand “internal controls” (auditors, finance) and those who don’t (Environmental, HR, Operations, Procurement, Safety – who happen to be the source of much of the data and information in Sustainability reporting and disclosures.

Mr. Hileman was at a Big 4 firm when Sarbanes-Oxley was passed.  Sarbanes-Oxley imposed requirements for internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR), and mandated internal sign-offs, and external auditor review of ICFR.  He supported many client efforts to design, implement, prepare for testing, and perform testing of internal controls.

Mr. Hileman has long been an advocate for expertise and professionalism around audits – both auditors and auditees.  He has contributed to the Institute of Internal Auditors, via presentations, curating conference programs, sustainability knowledge groups, writing supplemental guidance, and presenting webinars.
